Yoga to the Rescue for Osteoporosis

My new best friend is Dr. Loren Fishman, has an international reputation as a back-pain specialist, a diagnostician and a pioneer in the treatment of many disorders, including piriformis syndrome, scoliosis, osteoporosis and rotator cuff tear. I had the pleasure of hearing him in an interview on the People's Pharmacy on NPR, episode 1043. Dr. Fishman has been prescribing yoga as therapy for osteoporosis for years. Osteoporosis is caused by a number of factors often with age: hormonal, nutritional, metabolic and heredity. By the time most of us discover we have it we are often past our prime. Most physical fitness programs are too strenuous. As it turns out strenuous physical programs are not always necessary.

Dr. Fishman has been studying the effects of several yoga poses for strengthening deteriorating bones. Dr. Fishman's study reveals the 741 patients followed over a 10 year period showed improvement in bone mineral density in every-two-year follow-up study. Dr. Fishman's suggests performing 12 poses for 30 seconds each. Who knew? I think many yogis have known for centuries. We are just a few millennium behind the eight ball. It is never too late and you are never too old to start. I know a special 76-year old woman who started her practice at the age of 70. She can do any pose she chooses to try.

Dr. Fishman has several books and videos. His website is www.manhantanphsyicalmedicine.com. I urge you to follow Dr. Fishman and his work.

There are lots of ways to start and maintain a yoga practice. You can follow Dr. Fishman's DVDs, take classes at a studio or a free event at the park. Another easy way is to follow guided classes on the internet. A perfect way to follow an internet class is from your electronic tablet in a Pad Go Round.  Bone density loss is happening to you right now. Do not wait any longer and get started today!
